Heed Some Heel Advice
November 18th, 2011
How high should my shoes be on my wedding day? What’s the best height that will make me look tall but not put me through so much pain throughout the day?
When it comes to heel height, there really is no standard height—just a set of qualities you have to look for when you choose your shoes. Read on if you’re at a loss on what you should wear.
First thing you consider is heeled shoe style. Do you imagine yourself wearing strappy slingbacks or lacy pumps? Do you prefer wedges over kitty heels, or do you consider a pair of stilettos as your foolproof option? The kind of heels you want to wear will tell how high the shoes you’re looking for will be.
Once you’re decided on what kind of shoes to get, you can then move on to thinking about your shoes’ height. Typically, formal shoes are 2½” to 3” high, and are flat at the front sole. Shoes whose heels fall within the said range are considered medium heels.
Kitty heel pumps are a popular choice among brides. Pumps are classic, and because the heel isn’t too high, it’s comfortable enough to wear for a whole-day affair. Look for a pair with an elegant finish and a soft insole.
If you find closed shoes too constricting but still want a snug fit at the heel base, you can consider peep-toe pumps, which you can buy in various heel heights.
However, medium heels don’t always give you the extra boost of height (and poise) which you may want to have on your big day, since they’re so comfy. If you want more oomph when you walk down the aisle, opt for heels that range between 4” to 5”. High-heeled shoes come in a number of high heel varieties, from stilettos and wedges to platform heels.
These peep-toe pumps, roughly 4” high, make your legs look longer (especially when worn with a gown with a short frontal cut) and generally lengthens your stature.
Some say that shoes make or break a person’s attire. Strappy sandals, like the pair above, instantly add elegance to your ensemble, making it perfect for evening weddings.
The problem with heels this high, especially when they have flat front soles, is discomfort. Choose a pair with platform front soles so your feet aren’t inclined at an angle that’s too steep. Given a perfect fit, high heels are perfect for petite brides.
For brides who are blessed with ample height and who prefer shoes with low heels (if not none at all), there are also bridal shoes that come in flats.
Flat shoes can actually be worn in formal occasions. A shiny pair can go a long way, perhaps even beyond your wedding day.
Fancy ballet flats are also a nice option. Foldable ones are great for receptions and after-party events since they’re portable. Get a pair (or two) that comes in a pretty pouch.
Finally, the most important thing to consider is comfort. Choose a pair of heels that you are comfortable walking around in, and that you’re generally used to wearing. Your bridal shoes, after all, should not only be perfect in photographs, but also kind to your feet.
