Make your own soap favors!

December 9th, 2011

It is believed that the tradition of giving out wedding favors originated in France many centuries ago. Little gilded trinket boxes containing sugary treats were handed out to guests to thank them for their attendance at aristocratic weddings. The practice quickly caught on and soon developed so that almonds were the favor of choice. Nowadays, brides and grooms choose to give many things to guests as favors including chocolates, cakes and boiled sweets. There is however a new trend developing for non-edible favours. Things such as textile hearts, key chains and the thing that I am most excited about – soap!

Small, fragranced soaps make fantastic wedding favours that not only look great but are also extremely practical. Making the soaps yourself will be fun and make them extra special. There are so many soap shapes and scents to choose from that you will be spoilt for choice!

Soap Making
You will need:

Transparent Soap Base

Soap Dyes in colours to fit in with your wedding theme
Essential Oils
Rubbing Alcohol
Exfoliants
Molds
1. Soap base comes in squares just like chocolate! Separate the squares with a serrated knife. One square will usually fill one small mold. Place the cut up squares into a microwavable bowl and cover with cling film. Use the microwave to melt the soap base, following the heating instructions on the packet.
2. When the soap base is fully melted, give it a good stir with a whisk. Add your chosen soap dye to the soap base and stir it in thoroughly.
3. Add scent by stirring in a few drops of essential oils. Why not choose an almond scent to try and incorporate some tradition into your soap?
4. Let your soap base cool down a little and then add your exfoliants. This could be ground almonds, poppy seeds, rose petals, tea leaves or lavender buds.
5. Your soap is now ready to pour into your molds. There are some great love heart shaped soap molds available which would work really well for wedding soaps. Alternatively chocolate molds and silicone cupcake cases can be used too. When you have filled the molds, spray each one with rubbing alcohol to prevent bubbles.
6. Refrigerate your soaps for about one hour–during which time they should set nicely.
7. When set, gently turn the soaps out of the molds. Store them in a cool and dry place until you are ready to package them up for your big day.

Presentation
There are many ways that you can present your soap favors on the day. Try wrapping them in transparent cellophane wrap (the sort that florists use to wrap flowers) and tying it up with ribbon and a name tag. You could also try wrapping it in brown parcel paper for a really traditional feel. Use a piece of raffia to hold the paper in place. A small favor box could also be used to present your
soaps. Fill it with shredded tissue paper and pop your soaps inside. Why not throw a soap making party for you and your bridesmaids? Enjoy great company, a glass of wine and some fantastic hand crafts for your special day.
